The area located in the central west of Nepal is called Dolpo and it was opened for the foreigners in 1990. The Lower Dolpo area is enriched with the Shey-Phoksundo National Park covering an area of 3554 sq. km. The entire landscape of lower Dolpo is attractive both scenically and culturally.
Lower Dolpo trekking begins with flight to Juphal and onto the Phoksundo National Park through rugged canyons in the barren plateau near the border with Tibet. The sights of spectacular mountains, the glaciers of Kanjiroba, Buddhist monasteries and yak caravans during the trek are fantastic and incomparable.
This Lower Dolpo trek gives a wonderful experience to trekkers with its unique landscape and Tibetan culture far different from that observed in other parts of Nepal. As compared with other remote area trekking, lower Dolpo trek is the least difficult but most popular. The area is abundant in various rare and endangered species of wildlife such as snow-leopard, blue sheep, ghoral, musk deer, wolf and other wildlife and plants diversity, which can be seen nowhere else in Nepal. No high Himalayan peaks can be seen except lots of good high altitude scenery and clear water of Phoksumdo Lake.
